Literature Text

この, その, あの, どの + noun
Kono, sono, ano, dono + noun

Try not to get these confused with 'kore, sore, are, dore' as they are similar (so I refer you back to the previous tutorial: learningjapanese.deviantart.co…) but their uses are different. These can make a sentence slightly more specific and must always be followed by a noun (whereas 'kore, sore, are, dore' must always be alone).

これはいくらですか?
Kore wa ikura desu ka?
How much is this?

Replace 'kore wa' with 'kono+noun':

このかばんはいくらですか?
Kono kaban wa ikura desu ka?
How much is this bag?

Notice that the subject marker moved. It's not after 'kono' as the 'no' series has to have a noun after it; rather it is after the noun as the noun is now the subject of the sentence.

そのかさは千五百円です。
そのかさはせんごひゃくえんです。
Sono kasa wa sen gohyaku en desu.
That umbrella is 1500 yen.

あのじてんしゃは八万六百円です。
あのじてんしゃははちまんろっぴゃくえんです。
Ano jitensha wa hachiman roppyaku en desu.
That bike (over there) is 80,600 yen.

'Dono' is another way of saying which (such as 'dore') and thus must also use the 'ga' subject marker.

どのとけいが千円ですか?
どのとけいがせんえんですか?
Dono tokei ga sen en desu ka?
Which watch is 1000 yen?

Hi. I read somewhere that said:

 たかこさんのケータイは、どのケータイですか。

basically means "Which mobile phone is Takako's?"

But I'm sure there's a way of not having to repeat the person's name and the object again...

Any help would be appreciated. :)
